The route features the Homer Tunnel, which is 1270 metres long and is the second-longest road tunnel in New Zealand (after the Lyttelton road tunnel). SH94 also crosses the Main Divide of the Southern Alps.

- 1926: Work on the Milford Road section began when a local station owner started making his own road from Te Anau Downs Harbour south to the Te Anau Hotel.
- 1935: A rough road completed to the entrance of what would become Homer Tunnel. 1
- 1953: The Homer Tunnel was finished, after almost 20 years of intermittent work.
- 1980s: Sealing of Milford Road.
