General Information:
State Highway 2 links the outskirts of Auckland and Wellington. It consists mostly of two-lane single carriageway, with passing lanes. There are sections of four lane dual carriageway at Maramarua, Tauranga and Wellington.
The route features the Tauranga Harbour Bridge and Remutaka Pass, and also crosses the Waihou River, Rangitaiki River, Whakatane River and the Manawatu River.
SH2 is truncated between Hastings and Pakipaki.
Multiplexes along the route include:
- SH26, for 1 km at Paeroa
- SH30, for 1 km at Awakeri
- SH50, for 1 km between Port of Napier and Taradale
- Pacific Coast Highway, for 130 km between Waihi and Matata, for 19 km between Kerurutahi and Opotiki, and for 207 km between Makaraka and Napier.
- Classic NZ Wine Trail, for 259 km between Taradale and Greytown, and for 58 km between Featherstone and Ngauranga
History:
- 1987: River Road, between Maoribank and Silverstream in Upper Hutt, was opened to bypass central Upper Hutt.
- 13 March 1988: Tauranga Harbour Bridge opened to traffic by former Mayor of Tauranga, Robert Arthur Owens.
- 22 July 2001: Tolls abolished on Tauranga Harbour Bridge.
- 2002 to 2006: The route between Kaitoke and Te Marua was significantly realigned.
- December 2008: The 7km in length Mangatawhiri Deviation was opened to traffic.
- 7 September 2009: Duplicate bridge over Tauranga Harbour opened to traffic as part of the Harbour Link project.
- 2010: Construction of Dowse Drive interchange at Maungaraki. 1
- 2015: Safety works along SH2 between Tauranga and Waihi. Work included clearing roadside vegetation, guard rail installation and upgraded road marking. 2 Work on grade separating the SH2 / SH58 junction at Haywards Hill. 1
- 30 July 2015: The Tauranga Eastern Link, a 23 km tolled motorway from Te Maunga Junction to Paengaroa officially opened to traffic.
