Like many towns in the region, gold was the main catalyst for the establishment of Norseman back in 1892. Whilst gold is still mined within the town, the town is at the junction of the main highways between Perth and the east coast (Eyre Hwy) and between Kalgoorlie and Esperance (Coolgardie-Esperance Hwy). For those travelling by road from the Nullarbor Plain, the town is a welcomed site.
The town is surrounded by granite formations and eucalypt woodlands, and offers a number of historic buildings and the town centre is dotted with camel sculptures made from corrugated iron, as a reminder of the past when camels were used to pull and transport large loads around the region. The indigenous name for the area is "Jimberlana".
