Located in the Eden Valley region, Springton was originally called Black Springs, but derives its current name from Springs Dairy which was on the site before the town subdivision was surveyed. Springton includes the former village of Friedensberg less than two kilometres south of the Springton township.
Situated in a beautiful valley surrounded by forests, fields and vineyards, the town itself is tiny and unassuming, but offers a number of attractions including the Herbig tree with its fascinating history, which became the home to a man named Johann Friedrich Herbig, who emigrated to Australia in 1855. Having no money but lots of big dreams, Friedrich came upon the huge tree and made it his home.
