Australian Towns & Cities
South Australia: Renmark
Incorporating photos and Information
from Michael Greenslade's former Australian Towns, Cities and Highways
site
Renmark, the largest town in the South Australian Riverland, is also the oldest irrigation town in Australia as it was settled in the late 1880's by a Canadian duo who experimented with irrigating the water in the Murray River to promote vegetation in the surrounding areas. Today, the town is surrounded by vast fruit groves and is home to several canneries, wineries and fruit juice factories.
Renmark is very attractive - the Sturt Highway and Ral Ral Avenue are tree lined avenues with a colourful and busy shopping precinct adjacent to the various parks abutting the Murray River - also in town are several historic buildings, local wineries and wine tasting, the Paringa Bridge (4km east- excellent suspended bridge) and the Renmark Interpretive Centre. A great place to visit and to relax with plenty of facilities on offer for travellers heading west on the Sturt Highway.
