Port Elliot is a popular seaside town located on the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula. The town was originally set up as a port in the mid 1800's to deal with the heavy water traffic taking place on the nearby Murray River and Lake Alexandrina however with a series of shipwrecks, the port was abandoned with operations transferred to Victor Harbor. The town however, while in close proximity to the busy and commercial centre of Victor Harbor, is comparatively quiet. The stand out feature in Port Elliot is Horseshoe Bay - gaining its name for obvious reasons, offers safe swimming and has a great abutting foreshore. The Strand is also worth visiting as there are several interesting specialty shops, the Cockle Train railway station as well as many historic buildings. A great lookout point can be found 10km south at Crows Nest which offers great views over Port Elliot and the surrounding south coast.
