Mount Barker, South Australia's oldest town is located between Adelaide and Murray Bridge, just off the South-Eastern Freeway in the centre of the Adelaide Hills. While growth was steady up until the 1980's as the town served the surrounding sheep, dairying and fruit growing industries, it has undergone rapid expansion in recent times due to its close proximity with Adelaide, somewhat cheaper housing and the ability to offer a quieter lifestyle. The town itself is excellent - the upgraded, tree lined main street features a wide range of specialty shops with several historic buildings dating back to the 1850's standing amongst the town centre. Also nearby is the historic German town of Hahndorf 10km north-west and Mt Barker summit, 8km south-east - has an unusual peak and offers great views of the surrounding region.
