Australian Towns & Cities
Queensland: Southport
Incorporating photos and Information
from Michael Greenslade's former Australian Towns, Cities and Highways
site
Southport forms part of the greater Gold Coast area, and
is an the major business hub in the region. Originally known as Nerang
Creek Heads, it was named Southport because it was the southernmost port
of the colony of Queensland.
When proclaimed in the late 1800s, the area specialised
in cutting timber, which then opened up the area for settlement. Early
rural industries included sugar growing and livestock grazing. Southport
later became famous for tourist attractions and accommodation and
eventually became the central business district for the region.
