Gaining its name from the tall, multi-coloured cliffs that exist along the coast, Rainbow Beach, one of Australia's youngest towns, is located against the Pacific Ocean, 15km south of Fraser Island and in the northern Cooloola region. The town was established in the mid 1960's and initially was a base for sandmining operations. However, up until the late 1970's there was no road accessing the town with all traffic entering the town via boat from nearby Tin Can Bay. Upon completion of the road from Gympie, the town has slowly grown into a popular tourist destination due to its excellent swimming/surfing beaches and close proximity to Fraser Island & the Great Sandy National Park. A recommended spot to visit.
