Oakey, a medium sized town located in the eastern Darling Downs, lies just off the Warrego Highway between Toowoomba and Dalby and is named after the many she-oaks that grow in the district.

While the region was settled in the 1840's, it wasn't until 1867 when the railway line was extended, that the town developed into a centre for the local agricultural and beef industries and more recently a base for Australian army aviation.

The town itself is set amongst a series of rolling hills and black soil plains, has a recently upgraded town centre and a series of parks along Oakey Creek. In the area is the Acland Coal Museum (18km north), the Bernborough racing horse bronze statue and the Jondaryn Woolshed (heritage theme park - 22km northwest).
