New South Wales: Wentworth
Incorporating photos and Information
from Michael Greenslade's former Australian Towns, Cities and Highways
site
Named after William Charles Wentworth, a former NSW
politician, Wentworth lies at the far south-west corner of New South Wales
along the Silver City Highway and where the Murray and Darling Rivers
intersect.
The town was once a busy riverboat port but has subsided
over the years into a service town for the local pastoral and fruit
growing industries. Around town there are several historic buildings still
standing from the town's heyday (Old Wentworth Gaol, Courthouse and
Museum), several well tendered parks abutting the two rivers, river
cruises and shopping precinct. Certainly a nice town to visit and while
remote to Sydney is nearby to the bustling Mildura for further services.
