Warren lies on the Macquarie River where it crosses the Oxley Highway approximately 120km from Dubbo.
Established in the 1860's, the town grew around the local sheep industries and eventually became a railhead for a large surrounding area when the line was extended Nowadays, the town still remains the centre for the local sheep and cotton industries. The main street is clean and well looked after - the parklands along the river are also quite picturesque. Also in the area is the Tiger Bay Wildlife Reserve, a wetlands reserve to the north of town and Warren Weir (5 km south). The town is named after the nearby "Warren" station.
