Eastablished in 1983, the Belconnen Town Centre is the major commercial centre for the district of Belconnen. It features the region's major shopping centre, Westfield Belconnen (formerly Belconnen Mall).
Several federal government departments are housed in Belconnen including Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australian Communications and Media Authority and Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
Belconnen town centre is surrounded by a number of large hills and mountains, the closest being Black Mountain to the east, which features the striking Telstra Tower communications centre at its peak. Further away to the northwest is Mount Rogers, which offer views over the town centre and man-made Lake Ginninderra, which is fed by Ginninderra Creek from the north of the town centre.
Belconnen Town Centre offers a mix of residential (near Lake Ginninderra and along the eastern side of the town centre), commercial and light industrial areas and has a significant amount of parklands around Lake Ginninderra. Located close by at the suburb of Bruce is the University of Canberra, Calvary Hospital, Calvary Private Hospital and the University of Canberra Hospital.
