General Information:
Metropolitan Route 3 is an arterial route linking Melbourne with the Mornington Peninsula. It was a longer route, but was truncated with the introduction of the Statewide Route Numbering Scheme (alphanumeric route numbering).
For the most part, it runs along the coast through Melbourne's southern suburbs.
Formerly Nepean Highway was called The Great Western Port Road, then Point Nepean Road, then Nepean Highway 2
Multiplexes along the route include: 1
- MR10, for 400 m at Parkdale
- MR19, for 800 m at Brighton East
- MR25, for 600 m at Elsternwick
History:
- 1965: MR3 introduced 1 At the time, the route's northern end took in all of St Kilda Road, Swanston Street, Queensberry Street and Elizabeth Street, terminating at the Haymarket roundabout (intersecting with NR1, NR8, NR79 and NR31). MR3 was duplexed with NR1 on St Kilda Rd (Kingsway to St Kilda Junction) until Queens Way was constructed. 2
- 1979: Nepean Highway widened at Brighton 3
- 1998: Westfield Shoppingtown extended over Nepean Highway at Cheltenham via a bridge 4
- 1988:
The city portion of MR3 was deleted in the update of route numbering system. 2
