The Barton Highway is one of two major connectors from Canberra to the Hume Highway, which links Sydney with Melbourne.

The Barton Highway north of the ACT border carries over 10,000 vehicles per day. The route is a significant road freight link between the Hume Highway and the ACT. 1

Black Intersection Directional Sign:
The remains of a black ID sign facing Dog Trap Rd at Marchmont. This section of highway bypassed when the grade separated interchange with Hume Hwy (NH31) was built and the Barton Hwy (NH25) was rerouted to the current route. The current names of the former alignment is Dog Trap Rd and Kirkton Rd. March 2015. This sign has since been removed.
