Major routes Hindmarsh Drive intersects or conencts with include Tuggeranong Parkway, Yamba Drive, Jerrabomberra Avenune (former NR23), and Monaro Highway (A23).
Hindmarsh Drive is all dual carriageway, with 4 to 6 lanes for traffic and is used as a major cross city route from the Woden and Tuggeranong to connect to Queanbeyan and the eastern Canberra suburbs.
The route is named after John Hindmarsh (1782-1860), who was the first governor of South Australia, from 1836 to 1838. He was knighted in 1851. 1
History:
- 29 September 1966: Name was gazetted. 1
- 13 December 1966: The first section of Hindmarsh Drive, the Mugga arterial road from the Woden Valley to Fyshwick, opened to traffic. A one and a half mile section of Hindmarsh Drive from
Canberra Avenue, opposite Ipswich Street in Fyshwick, to Dalrymple Street, in Narrabundah, was the first of the five-mile link to be opened. 2
- 9 March 1967: Official opening of Hindmarsh Drive by Commissioner of NCDC, Rt Hon John Douglas Anthony. 3
- 1968: Installation of traffic lights at the corner of Hindmarsh Dr, Canberra Av and Ipswich St at Fyshwick. 4
- 1968: Street lighting installed on Hindmarsh Drive at junctions with Canberra Av, Jerrabomberra Av, Dalrymple St, Tamar St, Palmer St and Yamba Dr. 5
- April 1972: Traffic light installation at the corner of Hindmarsh Dr and Jerrabomberra Av at Symonston completed by AWA Limited at a cost of $22 410. 6
- November 1972: Traffic lights switched on along Hindmarsh Dr at the junctions with Melrose Dr and also Ainsworth St. 7
- April 1973: Permanent closure of the junction of Hindmarsh Drive and McDonald Street at Chifley. 8
- 2 May 1973: Traffic lights at the corner of Hindmarsh Drive and Jerrabomberra Avenue at Symonston were switched on. 9
- May 1974: Installation of traffic lights at the corner of Hindmarsh Dr and Melrose Dr at Phillp. 10
- 1978: Construction begins on grade separating Hindmarsh Drive / Tuggeranong Parkway junction. 11
- October 1979: Work commenced on duplicating Hindmarsh Drive at Weston, near Namatjira Drive. 12
- 1979: At grade junction with Tuggeranong Parkway replaced by grade separated interchange. 13
- February 1988: Work begins to relocate Hindmarsh Dr between Jerrabomberra Av and Canberra Av. 14
- 1989: Hindmarsh Drive extended from Jerrabomberra Av to junction of Canberra Av and Newcastle Street during Monaro Hwy construction.
- 22 November 1989: Hindmarsh Drive deviation to Canberra Av opened to traffic. 15
- 27 June 2005: Minister for Urban Services John Hargreaves officially opened the on-road cycle lanes constructed on Hindmarsh Drive. 16
- 2019: B52 re-routed via Hindmarsh Drive from Canberra Avenue to Monaro Highway. 17
