General Information:

Sturt Avenue and Jerrabomberra Avenue is the former alignment of NR23 in South Canberra. It was bypassed by Monaro Highway in 1989.

The route is dual carriageway and still remains in tact, as the route is still used on a daily basis on suburban traffic. The southern section in Symonston has minimal use, but is still fully striped as if it's still a highway. Only one of the old black directional signs along the route remains, the rest have been updated with newer versions.

Jerrabomberra Avenue:

Jerrabomberra is an Aboriginal word said to mean 'afraid of lightning'. Jerrabomberra is also recorded as the name of an Aborigine. 1

Sturt Avenue:

Sturt Avenue is named after Charles Sturt (1795-1869). He explored central Australia, and discovered the Darling and Bogan Rivers in 1829. He also sailed down the Murray River in 1830. He held the position of Colonial Secretary in 1851. 2
